Michigan 1997
1x1
In June of l997, we drove to Mackinaw City, Michigan. On our way we stopped at Green Bay, Wisconsin and toured the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Museum and Stadium. We went to Mackinac Island by ferry and spent three days and two nights. There were no vehicles allowed on this island, only horses, horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. We stayed at the Island House, one of the oldest hotels on the island. Grand Hotel is more famous because of the movies filmed there but we enjoyed seeing it and the beautiful grounds as we walked around the island. On the first day, we had a tour of the island by a horse drawn carriage. On the second day, we rented bicycles and rode eight miles around the outer roads of the island, which were the shorelines of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. The waters were cold and clear and we saw a beautiful natural bridge. We also enjoyed a reenactment of canons and rifles being fired as they did when the settlers protected Mackinac Island and Round Island. We left Mackinac Island and drove across the Mackinaw Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. We then drove to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to see the Sault Sainte Marie canal and saw a lake freighter lock through the canal. We also saw a video film of the construction of the canal and the importance it played during World War II. We completed our trip by stopping in Winterset, Iowa where we saw John Wayne's birthplace and the Bridges of Madison County.
