South Dakota 2000
In September of 2000, we planned another trip with our favorite traveling companions, Jeanne and Kenny, to see some of the sights of the beautiful state of South Dakota. Day 1, we drove to Mitchell, SD. After checking into our motel, we enjoyed a Polka Festival in the famous Corn Palace, which is also used as a center of community activities. Day 2, we finished touring the Corn Palace, enjoyed the Largest Balloon Museum in the World and an Enchanted World Doll Museum before going on to Kadoka, our designated meeting place. We arrived at our motel in Kadoka in late afternoon and what timing...as Jeanne and Kenny had just arrived. We spent the rest of the day visiting and enjoyed a dinner to celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary. Day 3, we drove through the Badlands National Park taking lots of pictures at every scenic overlook. We had two-way radios so we could communicate and I don't think we missed a single buffalo or antelope!. We ate lunch and shopped at the famous Wall Drug Store, located on the edge of the Badlands before going on to Custer, SD, where we spent the night. Day 4, we were up early so we would have plenty of time to see the Crazy Horse Memorial and the museum that houses the region's premiere collections of Native American artifacts, the National Museum of Woodcarving and the Mount Rushmore National Monument. We planned to see Mount Rushmore last so we could enjoy the evening performance of the lighting of the faces. On our way back to our motel in Custer, we all agreed that we had just witnessed some of America's best achievements, growth and spirit. Day 5, we were up early for our trip to Littleton, CO. We again utilized our radios to keep in touch especially driving through Denver...since it has really expanded over the years. We spent the rest of our week sight seeing, visiting with relatives and on a rainy Saturday afternoon we enjoyed the Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art where we saw a rare collection of paintings and sculptures. We even woke up Sunday morning to a winter wonderland of snow in the Rockies!! We watched the Chief's vs. Bronco game Sunday and then Monday morning we started home. We had an uneventful but beautiful scenic drive home. It just doesn't get any better than that!
